Match overview

Paris Saint-Germain left the Etihad Stadium with a 4-2 victory over Manchester City in Round 2 of the Champions League League Stage. The visitors made the decisive impact before half-time, scoring three times without reply, then added a fourth after City had briefly found a route back into the contest.

Manchester City had more possession, 54% to 46%, and produced the greater volume of attacking activity: 122 attacks, 70 dangerous attacks, 27 shots, 11 corners and 23 key passes. PSG, however, finished with 10 shots on target from 15 attempts, compared with City’s nine on target from 27. The contrast between City’s pressure and PSG’s final scoreline defined a six-goal night in Manchester.

PSG’s first-half surge

Désiré Doué put PSG ahead in the 13th minute with a right-footed finish, assisted by Fabián Ruiz. Two minutes later, Doué turned provider as Ousmane Dembélé headed in for 2-0.

The visitors extended their lead to 3-0 on 32 minutes. Vitinha scored with his right foot after Warren Zaïre-Emery’s assist, completing a first half in which PSG took all three goals. That early advantage gave the away side a substantial platform going into the interval.

City respond, PSG answer

City made three changes at the start of the second half, introducing Ayyoub Bouaddi, Iliman Ndiaye and Matheus Nunes. The response arrived in the 53rd minute when Erling Haaland headed in from Ndiaye’s assist to reduce the deficit to 3-1.

The momentum of that goal did not last long on the scoreboard. PSG restored their three-goal advantage nine minutes later, as Maghnes Akliouche finished with his left foot following an assist from Dembélé.

Haaland scored again in the 75th minute, this time with his right foot from Bouaddi’s assist, to make it 4-2. It was his second goal of the game and earned him the official Player of the Match award with a rating of 8.44. The final notable chance came in the 90th minute, when PSG’s Ferran Torres had a penalty saved.

Numbers behind the result

City’s output was extensive. They created six big chances, registered 18 goal attempts, and hit the woodwork twice. PSG created four big chances and hit the woodwork once. Both goalkeepers made six saves.

The home side also led in accurate crosses (10 to one), total crosses (26 to three), duels won (59 to 43), successful headers (12 to four), and successful passes (423 to 374). PSG recorded more interceptions, 15 to 10, while the teams were closely matched in passing accuracy: City completed 85% and PSG 84%.

Those figures underline how much of the match City spent on the front foot. Yet PSG’s four goals, built around a three-goal opening half and a timely fourth in the 62nd minute, proved sufficient to secure the away win.

Standout performers

Haaland’s two goals made him City’s central attacking figure, while Doué combined a goal with an assist in PSG’s fast start and also received an 8.44 rating. Vitinha scored PSG’s third and was rated 8.13. Dembélé contributed a goal and an assist, while Akliouche supplied the fourth goal.

PSG used five substitutions, including the 66th-minute introduction of Khvicha Kvaratskhelia for Doué. City used four changes across the match. Both sides received one yellow card: Antoine Semenyo for City in the 61st minute and Zaïre-Emery for PSG in the 69th.

The result belongs to PSG, whose early scoring sequence established a margin City could reduce but never erase.
