Bayern Strike Twice After the Break to Win in Madrid

Match overview

FC Bayern München left the Riyadh Air Metropolitano with a controlled 2-0 victory over Atlético de Madrid in Matchday 4 of the Champions League league stage. After a goalless first half, Bayern found the decisive edge after the interval through Lennart Karl in the 54th minute and Konrad Laimer in the 74th.

The final score reflected Bayern’s stronger attacking output across the match. The visitors recorded 58% possession, made 638 passes at an 89% completion rate and produced 19 shots, five of them on target. Atlético had 42% of the ball, completed 363 of 449 passes and registered nine shots, including three on target.

The decisive second half

Neither side scored before the break, leaving the contest finely balanced at 0-0. Bayern broke that deadlock nine minutes into the second half when Karl finished with his left foot to make it 1-0.

Atlético responded with a triple change in the 59th minute. Kang-in Lee replaced Álex Baena, Koke came on for Robin Le Normand, and Ademola Lookman replaced Alexander Sørloth. Further changes followed in the 75th minute, with Jonathan David replacing Julián Alvarez and Rodrigo Mendoza coming on for Pablo Barrios.

But Bayern extended their advantage in the 74th minute. Laimer struck with his right foot for the visitors’ second goal, with Harry Kane listed as the related player on the scoring event. It was a key moment in a game Bayern had increasingly tilted in their favour.

Bayern’s statistical advantage

Bayern created four big chances to Atlético’s two and posted 74 dangerous attacks compared with the home side’s 36. They also led 15-6 in goal attempts, 16-9 in key passes and 61-48 in duels won.

The visitors’ attacking volume was complemented by strong work without the ball. Bayern made 12 interceptions to Atlético’s four and won 25 tackles from 30 attempts, while Atlético won 17 of 26. Both goalkeepers made three saves, but Bayern’s overall control of possession and chance creation gave them the clearer platform over 90 minutes.

Atlético did find some success from wide areas, completing five accurate crosses compared with Bayern’s two, and matched the visitors with four corners each. Yet they could not turn their two big chances into a goal, while Bayern converted two of their four.

Standout performers

Laimer was named Player of the Match with a rating of 8.34. Starting in Bayern’s defensive line, he scored the second goal before being replaced by Sacha Boey in the 89th minute.

Tom Bischof earned a 7.76 rating, while Michael Olise (7.62), Joshua Kimmich (7.61) and goalscorer Karl (7.57) were also among Bayern’s highest-rated players. Manuel Neuer made three saves and received a 7.29 rating.

For Atlético, Dávid Hancko was their top-rated player at 7.29. Marc Pubill scored 6.97 and Marcos Llorente 6.93, while substitute Jonathan David was rated 6.87.

Discipline and closing stages

There were three yellow cards in the match. Kimmich was booked for time wasting in the 56th minute, Giuliano Simeone received a yellow card for a foul in the 79th, and Josip Stanišić was cautioned for dissent in the first minute of added time.

Bayern used three substitutions, bringing on Nathaniel Brown for Karl in the 68th minute, Min-jae Kim for Alphonso Davies in the 79th and Boey for Laimer late on. Atlético made five changes, but Bayern’s two-goal second-half return settled the contest and secured the away win.
